How many do you know?

Refraining from my usual fiction reads, i picked up this book from the library instead. And seeing that most of us are like, mid to late 20s, thought it'll be beneficial to share some of these essential/face-saving/life-saving skills with you...

it is a 315 pg book so i am not able to type/scan/copy all out to you (not forgetting copyright laws) but should you be interested in any skill, let me know and i'll show it to you. *insert smug face* hahaha

  1. wrap a present no kick basically. it has been a 'dream' of mine to work part-time during x'mas, wrapping ppl's gifts
  2. start a successful fire in a fireplace, at a campsite, and in a bbq we're not talking tons of lighter fluid and firestarter, but manageable
  3. finish a piece of furniture no idea
  4. get a raise damn lousy
  5. order wine at a restaurant without getting stiffed ultra low class me
  6. parallel park in 3 breathtakingly beautiful movements boo hoo
  7. dance 'slow dance' without looking like an idiot it really depends on the guy cos he's leading. *nudge nudge*
  8. use a full place setting properly, including chopsticks and Asian soup spoons watched Titanic? Leonardo was taught to work his way in; starting from the outermost cutlery.
  9. clean your place in under 45 mins, when friends, relatives, or prospective lovers are coming unexpectedly, and soon happens all the time. aihua and bk, dun be fooled by what u've seen. my mom nags at me every 3 days to clean up.
  10. hold your liquor working on it *wink*
  11. cure a hangover not necessary if i master no. 10
  12. do the Heimlich Maneuver wonder if i should learn cpr too
  13. use a compass thanks to npcc days
  14. change a flat oops
  15. jump-start a car i referred back and it's not the strike-2-wires-together-see sparks-and-car-will-come-alive-like-in-the-movies kind.
  16. open a champagne bottle wrestle with the cork
  17. send a drink to someone's table i prob want a drink sent to ME instead
  18. cook one 'signature meal' i wanna learn one signature meal, wat shld it be?
  19. whistle with your fingers they have pictures showing u how to do it. amazing.
  20. take good pictures learn from aihua
  21. fold a fitted sheet mastered
  22. remove common stains bought a book on common household tips. think i am preparing myself as a housewife, subconsciously.
  23. sew a button have you seen my ge ge costume?
  24. carve turkey, lasagna and birthday cake manageable
  25. hold a baby trauma. i caused a toddler to hit his head while i was holding him. guilt stricken and phobia
  26. change a diaper huggies pull up pants, the answer to everyone's problems
  27. keep a plant alive for more than a year cactus
  28. make dogs and cats love you i missed my waggie
  29. help someone out of a car (an older/ill person, a woman you're trying to impress, you mother) i think ladies should watch how they board and alight a car. watch the legs!

Realised i really CMI. I dont wrap presents, dont parallel park, dont drink wine, dance like a robot, can only cook maggie mee and eggs and cant sew.

Arh. No wonder no inflow of TLC from pretty girls. Sobz.

i know CMI = Cannot Make It

what's TCL? *scratch head*

then you better go and learn some of these 30 items before you turn 30 bah... hahahaha

anw in case any duno wat the Heimlich Maneuver is...i watched a documentary about it...more than 10 yrs ago.

It is a move to clear choking. you get behind the victim. put both arms around his waist. cup your hands together with your thumb angled at the first joint. and push up just above the belly button, near the bottom of the rib cage.

It is a life saving technique, but not the same as the cpr. More of abdominal thrusts as the website suggests. Don't know if my description of execution is accurate, so please refer to the wiki for more detail.

anw tlc is "tender loving care"...in case u still duno...

Anonymous said...

actualli...come to think of it...the life skills stated are indeed useful..esp for guys..etc..maybe i shd work on some of them..

Anonymous said...

hahaha.. which ones do you intend to work on?? pls share with mr goh yah... he should also work on some of the items too... => hahahaha

Anonymous said...

yup told mr slacker to learn the items so he'll get his tlc. imagine this:

u parallel park in 3 breathtaking movements, taking away the breath of a lady watching u. she chokes on her fishball (classic item) and crumbles.

u proceed to perform the heimlich maneuver, adding a kiss of life for a nice touch. she awakens to see u as her hero.

she asks u out for a posh dinner and u impress her with ur wine ordering knowledge, open the bottle when the waiter fails to do it, use the correct cutlery, hold ur liquor well and end the night with a well executed dance routine.

u whistle for a cab using ur fingers and she laughs, wondering how u did that. u help her out of the car cos she is wearing a gown that restricts her movement (she wore that just for you). she bowled u over so you handed her a prezzie that you wrapped exquisitely. she has stars in her eyes...

haha, u get my drift right?

hm...haha...u said it well...i will go and script my own strategy too...

Funnie that guys spend and learn things just for gals...:(..or is it sad?...and gals buy thgs for themselves...alas...smtimes i think being a gal has more advantages. But den again, i like being a guy, can do anythg i want..a vagabond and all...

Anonymous said...

that's bullmanure lah.

we girls will spend money to do things for guys, put in thought for every gift we create or every dish we prepare. fuss bout our hair, clothes, uneven eyes so that we will present the best of ourselves to you. may not equate in monetary terms, but i dun think we lack in the effort.

guys think that they can just give expensive stuff and proceed to watch soccer/spend time with the guys and stone. gals want the quality time and it doesnt cost much ya.

btw, the whole scenario i wrote was for laughs.

i like being a gal cos i like to dress up! *insert bimbotic laugh*

did u ever try to buy pants for a guy..or shoes?...or shirts?...can faint...cos it all looks the same to me...shoes and pants...are blank and similar design...like wat ronald macdonalds wear everyday...so lack of variety..for shirts, the onli variety is hafing stripes or no stripes..wonder who is the one who dictate such mens' fashion...

so i dun like soccer.(onli watch world cup)..wonder if tat helps w gals...haha..

Anonymous said...

hahaha... the whole scenario given by emi is super funnie... and i must admit there's a pretty fair chance of all these happening to you... so guys, you know what to do next then...

aniwae, it's not true that guys spend and learn things just for gals... gals also spend and learn things just for guys too... i guess it really depends on which party is on the giving or receiving end... someone has to give more and take less...

erhh... i think there's more variety to guys' shirts lei... there's stripes, dots, checks, squares, prints, etc... i guess you just stick to stripes or plain shirts becos you dont really dare to try new stuff... hahahaha...

next time we help you to revamp your wardrobe k... come shopping with us... we have helped a satisfied customer (mr slacker) to buy new shirts and colorful ties... he's very impressed with our selections... hahaha...

which reminds me.. mr goh ah, you havent wear the new tie and let me see lei... when??

Anonymous said...

well, the scenario is pretty far-fetched, but you never know. haha. mabbe i'll save the guy and he'll have stars in his eyes instead... who knows? =P

aihua, i think he is impressed with YOUR selection. you have a good eye. i will attempt to learn more from you. that is me doing my part to learn things for my future guy.

and andrew, see? i told u she still wants to see u in those ties. u cant escape...

just for fun...here is my take on the list of 30

1.wrap a present - i tried wrapping a prez b4..was...NOT perfect..abit clumsily done and all..but w full sincerity...tried sm innovative stuff cos i dun like to repeat also(my ktv kakis wld noe)..i did tried to do a japanese wrap...but couldn't find a suitable cloth. Ended up getting one of those cloth-like wraps from the wrapping shop along city link. Quite a good place to find ribbons and wraps. So it went horribly wrong, cos cloth was more suitable for the knot. hence i opted for a more cliché tie-it together wrap instead. Was immensely sad, cos i tot it was a great idea. Sianz..
Anw u can chk for furoshiki if u wan http://hubpages.com/hub/art-of-japanese-gift-wrap
http://www.env.go.jp/en/focus/attach/060403-5.html
Anw mi and alex found a book detailing how to fold origami japanese dolls in kimonos, chinese dolls and western (flatten versions). Great as bookmarks, gift cards or presents. We bought the book to keep for a rainy day...=P

2.start a successful fire in a fireplace, at a campsite, and in a bbq - i am nt very gd, though i know the idea..nid more prac..
3.finish a piece of furniture - shd be no prob..assembling..not drilling, buffing...cos out of prac..
4.get a raise - sadli i am too thin-skinned to do such thgs..shd improve when i got more bargaining power..
5.order wine at a restaurant without getting stiffed - attended wine appre..but still in a blur...at least i know the basics..
6.parallel park in 3 breathtakingly beautiful movements - nid a car to prac w first..
7.dance 'slow dance' without looking like an idiot..think if the lites are dim..and onli 2 ppl..shd be no prob..attended ballroom & salsa b4...but forgot lots of thgs..
8.use a full place setting properly, including chopsticks and Asian soup spoons - dun understand but shd be ok..attended dining etti.
9.clean your place in under 45 mins, when friends, relatives, or prospective lovers are coming unexpectedly, and gone thru tat many times..:P
10.hold your liquor - i dun drink much...but haf nv been drunk b4..puked once though..dun like to drink cos exp..liquor dun taste gd to mi either...
11.cure a hangover - take root of ginseng?..
12.do the Heimlich Maneuver - know in theory..nv try b4..anw cpr is simple..just get a book which details the steps..
13.use a compass - navigated lim chu kang, mandai forest, tekong, kao shiong(tw) wif it...the kinds tat use azimuth...but still find it hard to locate chkpts...duno y...
14.change a flat hmm - nv try b4..no car..
15.jump-start a car - no car...
16.open a champagne bottle – shdnt be too hard
17.send a drink to someone's table nv do b4...shd be okie if u got intention and sm beer maybe..=)
18.cook one 'signature meal' – attended cookie baking course..but nv try to bake myself..helped out in butter cake and stir frying of dishes at hm...hope to be able to make deserts, soups or pasteries in future...anw thai fd is gd..ate hm cooked thai fd b4...fab...
19.whistle with your fingers – someone pls teach mi smdae
20.take good pictures – shd be no prob..but still trying to figure nite shots..etc
21.fold a fitted sheet – to a certain extent yes...men's standard..:P
22.remove common stains – dynamo?..remember internet had a gd solution..hm..
23.sew a button check – used to do cross stitch...similar?...hm...
24.carve turkey, lasagna and birthday cake – i prefer to let the ladies do the magic...
25.hold a baby hmm – seriousli i am scared to hold them..afraid to drop them..too fragile..
26.change a diaper – easi in theory...duno abt practical..
27.keep a plant alive for more than a year - nv try b4..but i got sunflower seed seating smwhr...hafnt got ard to growing it..
28.make dogs and cats love you – a cat slpt over my body in tekong the whole nite. I ended up in rashes the next morn..think i understand the nature of cats and dogs...cats like warmth from humans and scratching...and dogs like to be scratched...
29.help someone out of a car (an older/ill person, a woman you're trying to impress, you mother) – here and there i do tat..nt to impress though..
30.write superior thank you notes – w sincerity?..

many of the stuff...i know abit...but am nt particularly gd in any...experiences show that being terrific in the selected few is actualli more favourable or useful.

Seriousli i dun shop much and was nt particularly willing to part w money to buy cloths. Tat explains the limited designs and simplicity in attire...duno realli know fashion, but i observe wat other guys wear nwadaes to improve my image.
