Whatever will be will be...

pondering what i should be doing for my career... hmm... *deep in thoughts & put on the thinking hats now*... white... red... black... yellow... green... blue...

PS: if you dont know what i am talking, google for keyword '6 thinking hats' and do your own reading =)
PPS: quick, thank me for sharing something that is very useful... hahaha.. management level stuff k...

A role in which i THINK i'll like to do....

What is a Financial Analyst?
+ A financial analyst researches macroeconomic and microeconomic conditions along with company fundamentals to make business, sector and industry recommendations.
+ They also often recommend a course of action, such as to buy or sell a company's stock based upon its overall current and predicted strength.
+ An analyst must be aware of current developments in the field in which he or she specializes as well as in preparing financial models to predict future economic conditions for any number of variables.

Types of Analyst Positions
1. 'Buy-Side' investment firms : research stocks for an in-house fund
2. 'Sell-Side' investment firms : write research reports for buy-side firms
3. Investment banks : determine whether certain deals are feasible based on the fundamentals of the companies involved in a deal (e.g. IPO, mergers and acquisitions.)

What to Expect on the Job
1. Gather information on the macroeconomy as well as information about specific companies and the fundamental microeconomics of their balance sheets
2. Do a lot of reading to stay on top of financial news
3. Significant amount of travel
4. Proficient with spreadsheets, relational databases and statistical and graphics packages
5. Develop detailed presentations and financial reports that include forecasting, cost benefit analysis, trending and results analysis

BUT as you all should know, i do not read and follow the news, am bad with data collection, bad at accounting stuff, bad with the nitty details, etc.... sigh!!

A role in which i FEEL i'll like to do....

What is a Project Management?
+ Application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements
+ A project is a carefully defined set of activities that use resources (money, people, materials, energy, space, communications, etc.) to meet the pre-defined objectives.

Top 10 Qualities of a Good Project Manager
1. Having a vision of where to go and the ability to articulate it
2. Good Communicator : ability to communicate with people at all levels, to effectively negotiate and use persuasion when necessary to ensure the success of the team and project
3. Integrity : "walks the talk" and in the process earns trust
4. Enthusiasm
5. Empathy
6. Competence : knows what he or she is doing
7. Ability to delegate tasks : demonstrate trust in others through your actions
8. Cool under pressure : take problems in stride
9. Team-building skills : holds team together in common purpose toward the right objective
10. Problem solving skills

hmm... i am not a good communicator & am bad at delegating tasks (cos i believe ppl would confirm do not do a good job)... guess need to accumulate more experience bah... sigh again!!

Roles/Areas in which i MAY CONSIDER trying....

Flight attendant (to travel around the world for free)... tour guide (get to meet ppl and visit new places)... magician (to entertain ppl and to do tricks that seems impossible)... hospitality/hotel/casino management (with IR and what not in the future... why not?? hahaha... )... consultancy... set up own business (but i dont know what...)...

sigh sigh sigh!!

When I was just a little girl,
I asked my mother, "What will I be?
Will I be pretty? Will I be rich?"
Here's what she said to me:
"Que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be;
The future's not ours to see.
Que sera, sera, what will be, will be."

so... if she's not doing, who is the next person to do?? ME lor...

to cut everything short.. basically, he asked me whether there is anything that i would want to do for next year given that the information he has told me... seriously, there's nothing lah!! i just said that i am interested to do financials and projects still... *insert disinterested look* hahaha... really think i should move on liao... hmmm

When I see the "Que Sera Sera" song I felt a bit sad. There's always a time in everyone's life when one would feel lost and wonder abt what the future holds. I would say if you know what you want in life, work towards it. If you're confused about what you want, then keep your choices open.

Right now I also have not much aim in life, slacking in work and stuff. Think I should also bucker up and start working hard.

Aihua, jiayou, you will find your ideal or close to ideal job soon!

Loveflower- The CBD keeps bullying u. Think he'll suffer when u leaves. So his retribution will come soon. For now juz smile at him. After all, revenge is a plate best served cold.

had my quarterlife crisis 2 years back. i think its difficult and also not advisable to have a really fixed long term plan as u miss out potential opportunities. its good to have a general idea what u intend to do in the future, and acquire the skills to achieve that. in any case, i think most analysts are crap.when their analysis goes wrong they'll say "due to unforseen events!", but there are always "unforseen events" in life. But if anyone decides to be an analyst, do be a buy side one. U have lots of sales pple sucking up to u.

No time left at cyber cafe.. haha, ok, if you interested to become a project manager, you should consider getting a PMP (Project Management Professional) Certificate. Its quite internationlly recognised and a quick search will bring you to the institute's website. Just check it out and see if its something you want to pursue.

Anonymous said...

wow.. alex visiting our blog?? hahaha... is it becos daniel is visiting it and you just 'kaypo' and see see right?? hahaha

yeah.. i know about the PMP cert years ago... =) it would be something that i would go for... not now of course, but a few years later... would need to accumulate all the relevant experiences for managing ALL areas of a project... now am only doing the low level stuff...

aniwae, thanks to all for your advices... am still wondering and pondering...

daniel & alex : have fun at KL yah.. rem to show us your photos and tell us abt the exciting rides/games that you play

Alex Wong said...

Muahahaha.... you sound honoured to have my on your blog!! (Quite "bu yao lian" rite? HAHAHAH)

Ok, in that case I'll visit more often! hahahaha.

Actually, don't need to have alot of experience before you get your PMP mar... alot of people get their certs first before they get their actual experiences.

Anonymous said...

hahaha.. at least you know yourself... =)

hmm... i supposed getting the pmp cert is just another cert bah.. may come in useful one day.. oh well, will consider taking the exam... not now though... hahaha...

actually i do visit your blog too lei. hahaha... saw the mba article, interesting perspective...hahaha.. it's so qiao, cos i was talking to my fren abt doing a mba in 3yrs time during dinner and at night i pop by your blog and saw the entry... am considering going to one to the b-school in the states

Andrew said...

b-school in the states are damn expensive. heard that fees plus living expenses will cost about 100k S$ a year. and i think b-school is typically 2 years.

Alex Wong said...

haha, then I'm honoured too. :)

Actually, whatever degree/certificate we pursue, I suppose the most important thing is knowing what we want, and how (or if) getting an MBA or any other cert will help us get there. The point of that article of course, was that getting an MBA for people already in the industry was pointless.

The key is this.... do we know what we really want? haha....

Anonymous said...

yeah, b-sch is abt 2yrs... tuition plus living expenses work out to around USD$74,000/yr... so i guess i would need to apply for some financial assistance bah.. hahahaha..

hahaha... errhhh... the reason for writing this entry is becos i do not know what i want.. now.

but i am sure i would want to go to b-sch in future... not for the cert per se, but to take a break from work, go back to sch, learn new stuff, meet new ppl, etc etc
