USA Day 2 - Universal Studio Hollywood (A)

Started our Day 2 trip with a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood - a combination of a working TV and movie studio and a movie-based theme park!

The famous Hollywood Sign, perched high atop Mount Lee, the tallest peak in Los Angeles.
Photo taken from Hollywood and Highland Center.

Zoom in on the T-rex dinosaur that broke through the roof of Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum.

Direction:
1. Take Metro Red Line train from Hollywood and Highland Station to Universal City Station
2. Follow the crowd to exit the station
3. Cross the road
4. Wait at the bus stop on the right side of the road for the free shuttle bus up the hill to Universal Studios. Frequency: Every 10 to 15 minutes

Universal Studio Hollywood bus and entrance

We produced our universal-print-at-home-tickets (each ticket priced at US$76.00 = SG$96.52) to enter the park and picked up a map and show schedule guide on the way in.

The first character that we met in the park is ... Marilyn Monroe!

... and becos Halloween was round the corner, a Walking Dead (oops, dont know the character) came to scare us!

Studio Tour - a must-do ride which brings you behind-the-scenes views of the world’s largest working movie studio

As the Studio Tour tram leaves the loading station and winds down the hill alongside the Starway escalators, you pass a long line of posters showcasing classic Universal movies from 1914 up to the present day.

Soundstages where production work is going on

Backlot - Brownstone Street, New York Street
Buildings, streets, facilities, town square, etc were constructed to provide ideal shooting conditions for productions. Wow!

Award winning King Kong 360 3D created by Peter Jackson is a 'drive-through' attraction where the tram will enter an enclosure and you will have a close-up encounter with King Kong.

The tram enters the stunt demonstration arena. As the demonstration commences, an overhead helicopter shoots at the cars, spraying up water as the bullets hit the pavement. Suddenly, a stray bullet hits a gas tank causing a massive explosion hurling the cars towards the tram.

Explosive special effects of the Fast and the Furious: Extreme Close-Up

The tram pauses next to a winding street running through a Mexican village. The tour guide demonstrates a movie "rain" effect involving rain bars which direct a spray of water upwards which then falls looking like rain. The tour guide then demonstrates a thunderstorm effect using powerful strobe lighting and thunder sound effects. The rain won't turn off - sometimes too much rain causes flooding - wait! What's that at the top of the hill?

A wall of water rushes down the hill and threatens to engulf the tram. A wooden cart swings perilously close to the tram and a signpost is thrown over by the force of the flood water. Then, just as the tram drives off, the water drains off the set and is pumped back to the dump tanks ready for the next tram to pass.

Starway escalator, which joins the Upper Lot (Entertainment Center) with the Lower Lot (Studio Center), provides some amazing views of the Universal backlot.

Spot a cute Despicable Me minions bag. I want one!
