PM = Poor Me

this is quite cool and very very true!! hahaha... read it a few years back and managed to come across it today =) so thought of sharing with you ppl... enjoy!

aniwae, i do not agree with the last statement!! the big things get done, ppl pat themselves on their backs and then disappear or move on to other big things... and then what?? they just leave the small, irritating and difficult pieces of work for small fries like ME to pick up and resolve... really clearing up their mess lor =(

btw, for the record, i am INSTRUCTED to work min 10hours a day... i.e. must report to work before 9am (fair enough) and leave after 7pm (god!!!!!!)... i am so tired now and this is only week 2...

Micro Managing and Two Cans of Beer
(An Object Lesson In Project Management)

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some articles before him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large empty glass jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

Then said the professor, as the laughter subsided:

"Now, I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things: your family, your children, your health, your friends, your favorite passions – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full."

"The pebbles are the other things that matter: like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else – the small stuff."

"If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you."

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another round of golf. There will always be time to clean the house, and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first. Those are the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

There was a pause, and then a truculent student voice from the back muttered "Warrabout the beer?" The professor smiled.

"I'm glad you asked! It just goes to show that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers!"

While you are busy chuckling over this anecdote, just remember that this is also good advice for the project manager:

Stop micro managing and get the big things in the project done first. If you don't, you'll never get everything done within the time available!

SG Biennale 2008

Pls mark your calendar for the Singapore Biennale 2008 !! 8 NOV 2008. (hmm, will bring forward to 18 Oct 2008 if we are not going for the car boot sales at playground)

i missed the event last year and so i am going for it this time round... and i believe i am not the only person interested in it, so guess i would have some company then... hahahaha.. let me know if you are interested to go yah =)

Introduction

Singapore Biennale 2008 will feature 137 artworks by 66 artists and art collectives from over 36 countries and regions including Singapore. The aim for the event is to position Singapore as an international centre for the art (that's why we build the Esplanade for right??) , to provide new opportunities for Singapore artists, curators and arts businesses and to provide opportunities for ppl like you and me to be part of the experience (hahaha, i just love the free guided tours at SAM, nice! and i learnt a fair bit of stuff).

Quoted from their media release: This year's theme WONDER, proposes to investigate the articulation and creation of marvels, riddles and illusions in our world today. Its conceptual scope issues a challenge to the contemporary world, a world that no longer questions choices, nor allows for things and events to awe us. Through contemporary art, Wonder calls on us to question and be curious; to reach beyond the surface, surpassing the apparent and to allow ourselves be surprised, awed, tantalised and challenged. All of which is an aperture to the World.

Hmm, sounds complicated.. guess it's better for us to see and experience it for ourselves right??... hahaha...

Car Boot Sales at Playground??

We went blading at ECP 2 sats back and saw an advertisement at Big Splash @ Playground for SG Car Boot Sale on the 18/19 October 2008, Sat/Sun, 10am - 10pm.

YESH!! That ad got both fiona and me pretty excited, cos *sheeplish smile* we do have lotsa stuff at home which we bought and never use/ seldom use/ use once... hahahaha...

And since i didn't get to go out yesterday, i managed to clear up my room and pack up 3 bags of items which i can potentially 'sell'... mostly bags, accessories and misc items that i bought during holiday trips and i never get around to use them... =)

Aniwae, so anyone interested to share in the rent ($50 for Sat) for a car park space to sell some items (i.e. your unused clothes/ bags/ accessories/ misc or home-made jewelries/ cards/ etc)?? Hmm, i think the main concern here is to find a car first right?? *thinking of whether we can possibly eye someone's car* hahaha... no car = no car boot = no car boot sales!

And as emi has suggested, i would take some photos of the stuff that i have got and you ppl can give me comments as to whether they are resale-able or if you would like to have them... =P

SG Car Boot Sale:

Rates: $50 / weekend day (buy 1 day - inclusive of parking charges, get another day free - parking charges at $1/hr applies)
